Microprocessor Optimised Vehicle Actuation (MOVA) is an operation method developed to overcome some of the problems associated with traditional Vehicle actuation (VA) control. MOVA is more responsive to traffic conditions and often leads to a significant increase in capacity at a junction.
–MOVA assesses the traffic flows approaching on each arm of the junction and then calculates which arm should be allocated what green time and seeks to determine a set of signal timings which will maximise the throughput of the junction under the current conditions.
One of the main problems with traditional VA control can be the failure of detectors. The detectors are usually set to ‘fail active’ therefore if there is a fault they keep on registering a demand in the controller even when there is no traffic. This causes the greens to be extended unnecessarily which inevitably leads to a decrease in capacity and an increase in delay (if the detectors failed inactive then they wouldn't register the vehicles that were passing over them and queues would build up as the traffic was undetected).
Due to the detector layout for MOVA operation there is an effective back up system which allows up or downstream detector outputs to be used in place of the faulty detector. Whilst this is not fool proof it can still lead to benefits over and above those gained from traditional VA control.
MOVA can be implemented on almost all junction types and is becoming much more common throughout the Country. Typical uses include standalone junctions of varying size and complexity, and signal controlled roundabouts.
MOVA systems can usually be identified on street by the diamond shaped detectors cut into the carriageway.
